Solar Panels and Roofs in Mount Airy's Historic District
The Town's 2010 historic district design guidelines prohibit placing solar panels on a roof where they are visible from a public right-of-way. They also require a replacement roof to match the existing roof in size, orientation, color, and reflectivity as closely as possible. Those guidelines are more than ten years old and cover the Historic District only. If your home is in the district, get the Planning Commission's review before work starts.

The Town's Planning Commission reviews exterior changes inside the Historic District, since the Town has no separate historic review commission. For permits, the Town says it has transferred building permit processing to the Carroll County Bureau of Permits and Inspections, including for properties in Frederick County. Even on a Frederick County address, expect your building permit to come from Carroll County.
Not on any side the public can see. The 2010 guidelines prohibit using metal or vinyl-clad windows to replace wood windows on the front facade and on side and rear facades visible from a public right-of-way, such as a street or sidewalk. Metal or vinyl-clad replacements are allowed on side and rear facades that cannot be seen. Pick the window material with your street view in mind.
On November 2, 2018, the National Weather Service reported an EF-1 tornado at Mount Airy with estimated winds of 100 mph and a path 4.7 miles long, and a local report described roof damage to several buildings. EF-1 covers winds of 86 to 110 mph. After a storm that hit that hard, check your roof edges from the ground.
