The City of Brunswick's published Conservation District Design Guidelines, dated December 2020, say that synthetic exterior material is discouraged throughout the district unless it replaces existing non-original material of the same kind. Can new shingles go over an old roof in Brunswick's Conservation District?

The published guidelines say putting new shingles over an existing roof should be avoided and that, if a roof is highly visible, replacement material should match the original as closely as possible. For visible roofs in the district, the guidelines name wood shingles, standing-seam metal, which has raised seams between panels, and asphalt shingles.

What did the September 2004 tornado do to roofs?

On September 17, 2004, the National Weather Service recorded an F1 tornado one mile northwest of Brunswick, with structural damage to a couple of homes, roof damage on other buildings, and trees downed. The original Fujita scale describes F1 winds of 73 to 112 mph as moderate damage, with roof surfaces peeled off. Look at your roof edges from the ground after any storm that strong.

Does storm repair in a Brunswick flood zone need extra review?
